The phrase “limiting your degrees of freedom” is used in the physical therapy world.
It’s when a patient intentionally restricts their range of motion so they can master a movement without being overwhelmed by possibilities.
When I first heard that phrase the other day I immediately thought of how that has a wider applicability to depth psychology and astrology transits, like the current Full Moon eclipse in Pisces.
The following Marion Woodman quote about freedom is one I have pondered a lot lately and is applicable here:
Freedom is not license, nor is it selfish egoism. To be psychologically free is to be confident in our own inner world, responsible for our own strengths and weaknesses, consciously loving ourselves and, therefore, able to love others (p. 11, The Ravaged Bridegroom).
Perhaps my most favorite take on freedom is Jung’s: “Free will is doing gladly and freely that which one must do.“
Amor fati, in other words.
That is an excellent way to reconcile the opposites of Pisces and Virgo.
Pisces Moon can have a hard time setting boundaries. Sun in Virgo energy can help us do what one must do. Fullness plus discipline, as Woodman says:
“Freedom is living your essence to its absolute fullness. And you can’t do that without discipline—daily, hourly discipline” (p. 84, The Forsaken Garden).
By consciously limiting our degrees of freedom we can transform a difficult necessity into a disciplined path toward true psychological freedom.
